smart foods healthy kids
- This is the first “modern” generation the Centers for Disease Control predicts will have shorter lifespan than their parents (think food and environment!)
- Today in the US, one in fifteen kids under three-years-old has a food allergy (it sure wasn’t like that when I was little!)
- Children born after 2000 have ridiculously huge chances of developing diabetes. If they’re Caucasian, the chances are merely one in three. African American or Hispanic kids have a whopping fifty-fifty shot at getting diabetes. (Twenty years ago little kids just did not develop Type 2 diabetes!)
These statistics compel us here at Smart Foods to teach moms how to create healthier families…those stats MUST change! And educated moms CAN change them: after all, we’re the ones who spend 93% of the food dollars.
We’ve learned that change works best if it’s yummy, and fun, and guilt-free. So we help people get on the “Good Better Best Path” no matter where their starting point.
There are three basic principles we think really help on the Good Better Best Path…
- Listen to your body and intuition. Every body is different, so ONE SINGLE “perfect” diet for every person on the planet is unlikely.
- You don’t have to change everything at once. If you eat two vegetables today, and yesterday you only ate one, you’ve DOUBLED your veggie intake!
- When in doubt, pretend you’re a caveman. If you’re wondering whether something is healthy, imagine if a cave dweller would have stumbled upon it. If it comes in a plastic package with a lot of big, un-pronounceable words on the label, your genetics probably aren’t suited to whatever is in that bag.
At Smart Foods Healthy Kids, we educate to empower. So go ahead, watch a video and get stronger and smarter at the same time!

Here’s why I do what I do:

The “mamahood lens” changed my whole perspective on the world, especially relative to kids. Statistics about childhood obesity/autism/diabetes/allergies/life expectancy/fill-in-the-blank aren’t stats now…they are someone’s very-loved child who deserves to be healthy. Just like my own.
As a mom with two children, and a Harvard masters degree focused on environmental policy, I know too much about chemicals not to share what I know with other mothers. And, since the greatest chemical exposure kids are likely to experience comes from the very foods we feed them, I can’t help but “dish out” healthy recipes.
Besides, my first child was born with horrible reactions to certain foods, so by default, I learned much more about food allergies and intolerances than I’d ever expected. With so many other moms on the “food issue” path now, I feel even more inspired to share what I’ve learned (saving other moms from the yucky “substitute” food recipes we’ve had to spit out!)
Since I couldn’t find a simple, whole health guide for Moms by a Mom, I founded Smart Foods Healthy Kids. I hope it helps us all raise healthier, happier kids.

When I was eight, I sprayed an ant with insecticide, and watched some pretty amazing death throes right before my eyes. I remember thinking, “If this stuff can have such a big effect on an ant (who, up to this point, had shown great resiliency against my magnifying glass research), what would it do to me?”
I stopped using pesticides that day.
Between then and now, I earned a few degrees (including a Masters of Science in Electrical Engineering), and I’ve been CEO of several companies in the semiconductor, digital imaging, network security, and interactive advertising fields. Moreover, I have two sons, whose presence motivates me daily to keep them as healthy and as chemical-free as possible.

“How much difference does one cookie really make?” I used to say to myself. “I’ll just take a vitamin and everything will be okay…”
Then, my last year in college, I developed something like asthma. I was quashed: mentally, strength-wise, happiness-wise. Years went by, and some months I could barely get out of bed. Doctor after doctor gave me drugs and steroids galore, none of which worked.
But I got a miracle. Without really understanding why, I started going organic. No more processed foods, harsh chemical cleaning supplies, kitchen plastics… And slowly I got better. No breakthrough diagnosis, magic pills, or exotic herbs necessary.
Now I enjoy great health, and I “get it.” I was dumping poisons into my body, daily, and they were keeping me sick. All along, the cure was so simple – it is so simple! The little things we do everyday, like choosing a carrot over a cookie, build or break health.
I know I’ll never be sick like that again, and I want the same to be true for our children. If the toxins of modern life had such a profound effect on an otherwise healthy 20-something, what are they doing to those growing little bodies and brains?

Confesson: until recently, I didn’t know what “organic” really meant, and I couldn’t tell a GMO from a whole in the wall. I used to think, “Cool, I don’t have to take any antibiotics anymore: they’re automatically put in the cows! That will save me trips to the doctor and money.”
Then came Kelly. It started out as a friendly favor. She’s a fashion-disaster, and I have four girls, so I’m all about doing hair, applying makeup, and putting together a great wardrobe. It was apparent Kelly needed serious help in all three departments. So, next thing I know, I’m at the shoots, improving the way she looks on camera.
But I soon realized I was the one with the better end of that stick. Listening to her message while she created the video classes really opened my eyes. My whole life has changed, definitely for the better!
I hope the same thing happens for you and your family. We have choices. Let’s hope we all make the best ones for us! I know I have.
belinda serata: essence capturer
(Disclaimer: Belinda was far too ungenerous in describing herself…she merely refers to herself as a gourmet-cooking southern belle who likes to fish and dive. Not nearly sufficient for her exceptionality…so Kelly took over.)
Belinda dwells in creativity and beauty. She can’t help herself: in her work, in her interactions with people, and on her own table.
When she turns her lens to a project—like a wedding or a natural setting or children being children—she captures a singular moment like no other photographer I know. Thankfully, she captured our recipes, and “food moments.” The most creative photos you see on the website are thanks so Belinda (my meatloaf never looked so good!)
She photographed for our upcoming cookbook, too, which will certainly inspire you to get on the Good Better Best path!
